Position Overview:

 The Philanthropy Communications Writer develops clear, compelling, and donor-centered content that supports PHS’s fundraising, leadership levels of membership, and campaign goals. This position writes proposals, cases, stewardship pieces, impact materials, and donor communications that inspire engagement and strengthen philanthropic relationships. The Writer works closely with fundraisers, program staff, and Marketing to ensure consistent messaging and high-quality communications across all Development initiatives. 

Primary Responsibilities (maximum 12):

Campaign & Fundraising Content 

  • Draft and maintain key campaign materials, including the master case for support, priority case statements, the giving priorities menu, and program/project one-pagers. 
  • Develop concise meeting-ready tools such as campaign overview sheets, talking points, and impact summaries. 
  • Contribute writing for campaign-related digital content, including the campaign microsite and donor-facing updates. 
  • Support development of higher-level collateral and creative storytelling pieces that elevate the campaign's visibility and appeal. 
  • In collaboration with Marketing’s Communications team, maintain consistent messaging across all philanthropic communications and ensure alignment with the PHS brand and campaign narrative.  

Proposals & Donor Communications

  • Write customized proposals and funding requests for major donors and institutional partners. 
  • Develop adaptable templates and standardized language banks for fundraisers to use in solicitations and donor outreach. 
  • Draft donor email updates, cover letters, acknowledgments, gift impact reports and talking points that reinforce key messages and encourage continued engagement. 
  • Translate program information and strategic priorities into clear, persuasive donor-facing narratives. 

Stewardship & Impact Reporting

  • Write general stewardship reports, project updates, restricted gift reports, and endowment reports. 
  • Create concise impact stories and summaries that highlight progress, outcomes, and donor value. 
  • Collaborate with program and data teams to ensure accuracy and clarity in all impact writing. 

Collaboration & Content Management

  • Partner with Development and Marketing to ensure consistency in voice, tone, and campaign messaging. 
  • Gather information from staff across departments and transform technical or programmatic content into accessible donor-friendly language. 
  • Maintain an organized library of core messaging, boilerplate language, and campaign assets. 
  • Participate in the Philadelphia Flower Show (with expanded capacity during Show season). 
  • Other duties, as assigned 

Qualifications/Specification:

  • Minimum degree requiredBachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Years of experience:
  • 3–5 years writing experience in nonprofit development, philanthropy, communications, or similar fields.  
  • Licenses/Certifications: N/A
  • Driver’s License: Required
  • Knowledges, Skills, Abilities required for success:
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills; ability to translate complex ideas into compelling content. 
  • Strong project management and organizational ability; comfortable managing multiple deadlines. 
  • Collaborative approach and strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Familiarity with fundraising, donor stewardship, and campaign communications a plus. 

Physical Demands:
This is largely a sedentary role that requires looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time; however, some physical demands are required.

Standard Hours (including travel, evening, and weekend hours): PHS’s standard office hours are 9 AM to 5 PM at team member’s designated workspace. Some teams and positions work alternate hours because of the nature of their role at PHS. Your Business Unit’s Working Norms document will identify alternative hours, if applicable. 

Flower Show Requirements: Hours preparing for the show and the duration of the show may not follow your regular work schedule. Your Flower Show schedule will depend upon your regular position or your temporary position supporting the Flower Show. You may be required to stand for long periods of time, do extensive walking, and lift up to 25 pounds.
