The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications who will develop and execute comprehensive marketing, communications, media, and engagement strategies that are aligned with AMS organizational goals and values. As a member of the senior management team, you will play a vital role in maintaining and expanding the AMS’s marketing and communications efforts at a pivotal time for science. You will oversee the planning, development, and execution of marketing and communications, including social media, email marketing, newsletters, collateral, advertising, and the official communication channel of the Society. In this hands-on role, you will also develop engaging copy for a variety of digital channels matching the AMS voice and brand. 

The Director of Marketing and Communications will report to the Associate Executive Director and will work closely on a day-to-day basis with staff, directors, executives, and volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic marketing and communications plans to advance the AMS identity, increase program visibility, drive revenue, and strengthen relationships, while periodically reevaluating plans with input from staff and volunteers
  • Provide overarching strategic direction, lead high-priority projects, and collaborate closely with staff across AMS programs to help guide and shape their marketing and communication efforts
  • Manage and mentor two full-time marketing and communications team members who implement the marketing and communications strategy through social media, blog, website, media relations, and other avenues
  • Provide high-level oversight for the team that produces the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) magazine
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate email campaigns using our online marketing platform, Informz
  • Collaborate on organization-wide initiatives, projects, and goals while maintaining clear communication across departments
  • Develop and maintain departmental budget
  • Provide backup support to marketing and communications staff to ensure continuity of operations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Marketing or a related field or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training
  • Ten or more years combined progressive experience in marketing and communications, public and media relations; and brand and digital strategies
  • Skilled at managing within a relatively small organization; responsible for both high level strategy and day-to-day operations, with the ability to use limited resources for maximum impact
  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting to a range of audiences (such as professional members, enthusiasts, students, and the wider public)
  • Experience with Informz / Higher Logic or other digital marketing platforms
  • Interest or background in the physical sciences
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a focus on strategic goals and team collaboration
  • Ability to work effectively in close collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including volunteers, leadership, staff at all levels, and vendors
  • Ability to respond quickly to unexpected challenges and shifting priorities
  • Experience with digital analytics platforms such as Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity or other analytics platforms
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, digital marketing tools, video/multimedia, and creative software like Canva
  • Basic knowledge of webpage design and maintenance, with the ability to update and manage content
  • Experience with scientific nonprofit organizations preferred
  • Experience with event marketing a plus

This is a full-time position, and salary will be commensurate with experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package including generous health, dental, and vision coverage and paid vacation, sick time, and holidays. AMS offers a superior retirement plan and group life and disability insurance after one year of employment. AMS is also a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) qualified employer. This position can be 100% remote, but you must be available during our core business hours of 9:30am to 3:30pm EST/EDT. A hybrid schedule is also available for candidates in the Boston area. Limited travel is required (such as for the AMS Annual Meeting).
