At the present time, a vacancy exists for a Special Education Teacher within the Brandywine Virtual Academy division of the Chester County Intermediate Unit for the 2025-2026 school year with Philadelphia Virtual Academy.
This position will be located remotely and in person at the Educational Service Center in Downingtown, PA and within the School District of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA. This position is responsible for planning instruction and/or adaptation of the individualized education program to enable students to benefit from educational opportunities in a virtual environment. The teacher will serve as a compliance monitor, ensuring proper documentation and implementation of special education services while delivering high-quality virtual instruction to students with diverse learning needs.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED:
Bachelor's Degree in Education
Valid PA Teaching Certificate
Valid PA Special Education Certificate (N-12)
Current criminal history clearance, child abuse clearance, and FBI fingerprint clearance
Clearance as an MA provider by the Commonwealth of PA and federal government (conducted by CCIU upon hire)
Highly qualified in the area/level of instruction in specific content area
Proficiency with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and digital education tools
Demonstrated ability to adapt curriculum for online delivery
PREFERRED:
• Experience working with special education students
• Experience working with children and adolescents with severe and complex behavior challenges in school, community, or residential settings
• Experience with online/virtual teaching environments
• Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
• Familiarity with National Standards for Quality (NSQ) Online Teaching and Learning
• Experience with compliance monitoring and documentation review
Duties & Responsibilities:
Design and deliver engaging virtual instruction that adheres to National Standards for Quality (NSQ) Online Teaching standards, utilizing various digital platforms, tools, and resources to enhance student learning
Implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to create accessible online learning experiences for all students, customizing digital learning environments to meet individual student needs as outlined in IEPs
Maintain IEPs for students, including leading meetings, inviting participants, completing necessary paperwork, and developing appropriate transition plans based on student individual needs
Complete necessary paperwork to include Summary of Performance and Exit Surveys for students as necessary
Assess progress of goals and objectives through quarterly reports, including progress monitoring, record keeping, and reporting of progress
Monitor and assess student engagement and progress in virtual learning environments, utilizing data-driven instruction to inform educational decisions
Conduct compliance monitoring responsibilities including review of student applications for possible acceptance into program, ensuring IEP implementation fidelity, tracking service delivery and documentation requirements, and monitoring timelines for evaluations, reevaluations, and meetings
Create and maintain a positive, inclusive online classroom community that promotes student success and is conducive to students learning and progressing through individual goals and objectives indicated on IEPs
Access and create instructional materials, media, technology, on-site experiences, and community-based experiences that lead students to progress through individual goals and objectives
Effectively navigate and utilize Learning Management Systems (LMS) and various digital platforms to manage coursework, assignments, assessments, and student data
Troubleshoot basic technical issues and provide appropriate support to students and families in the online setting
Provide support and instructional guidance to online learning coaches/assistants and families to ensure effective implementation of virtual learning strategies
Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers (OT, PT, speech therapists), sending school districts, and families to support student achievement and IEP implementation
Maintain regular contact with parents of students and/or professionals concerning student progress through virtual meetings, phone calls, and electronic communication
Prepare report cards, educational records, classroom observation records, and other documentation as required
Function as integral member of treatment/IEP team, addressing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students
Participate in staff development activities, maintaining current knowledge of emerging technologies and pedagogical approaches in virtual education
Collaborate with colleagues to develop and share best practices for online special education instruction
Schedule: 5 days per week, 7.5 hours per day. 194 days per year for new professional employees/191 days for professional staff in year two/190 days in all subsequent years.
