The Opportunity:

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) is seeking an experienced Internal Communications Associate Director to build a modern internal communications function that connects employees and stakeholders to our mission, strategy, and culture.

Reporting to the Vice President of Brand and Communications, this newly created role will play a critical part in shaping how information flows across PHS. The Internal Communications Associate Director will lead the development of communication strategies, channels, and processes that strengthen organizational alignment, support employee engagement, and help staff navigate change.

This is a unique opportunity for a communications professional who enjoys building systems from the ground up. The successful candidate will partner closely with multiple business units to create an employee intranet, establish internal communication systems, support PHS’s strategic plan implementation, and create meaningful opportunities for employee connection and feedback.

The ideal candidate is both strategic and hands-on; someone who can develop communication frameworks and governance while also creating compelling content, managing projects, and driving execution across a dynamic, mission-driven organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

Strategic Communications & Change Management

  • Develop and execute internal communications strategies that ensure employees and stakeholders(Board and committee members) are informed, engaged, and aligned with PHS's mission, values, strategic priorities, and organizational goals.
  • Translate organizational strategy and business priorities into clear, accessible communications that help employees understand direction, progress, and impact.
  • Support internal presentations, staff meetings, and key organizational announcements.
  • Support additional projects and onboard responsibilities as needed.

Internal Communications Infrastructure

  • Build and manage PHS's internal communications ecosystem, including an employee intranet, email communications, organization-wide event calendar, and other channels that serve as resources for employees.
  • Establish governance, editorial standards, content workflows, and processes that support knowledge sharing, cross-departmental collaboration, and organizational transparency.
  • Establish feedback mechanisms and processes to gather input and insights from staff and use this information to refine communication strategies and practices.
  • Produce the “Good News” communication in coordination with President’s Office.

Employee Engagement & Culture

  • Design and implement employee listening strategies such as surveys, focus groups, and feedback mechanisms that help inform organizational decision-making.
  • Partner with Shared Services team to support employee experience initiatives, staff meetings, recognition programs, and culture-building activities.
  • Develop resources and communication toolkits that help employees and stakeholders effectively communicate and represent PHS's mission and impact.

Content Development & Measurement

  • Create compelling content across internal communication channels, including intranet content, newsletters, presentations, and employee-facing resources.
  • Use data, feedback, and analytics to continuously improve strategies, content, and processes.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously while ensuring timely and high-quality execution.

Education, Experience & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, journalism, communications or a related field.
  • Minimum five years of experience in internal communications, employee communications, organizational communications, change management communications, or a related field.
  • Self-directed, highly organized, and comfortable building new processes, systems, and programs in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience launching, managing, or significantly enhancing an employee intranet or digital workplace platform.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Experience using project management platforms such as Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Monday.com, or similar tools.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit, mission-driven, educational, healthcare, cultural, or similarly complex organization preferred.
  • Commitment to the mission of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and PHS Values.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to traverse indoor and outdoor terrain for extended periods of time if needed, and lift a maximum of 20 pounds. Most of the following physical demands are required during the annual Philadelphia Flower Show. 
  • Ability to work extended days and flexible hours, as needed, throughout the year and in preparation for the annual PHS Philadelphia Flower Show.
