Description

JOB GOAL: To ensure that teachers are prepared to use instructional technology with students, and that 21st
Century Skills will be embedded in the curriculum across all content areas to ensure that each
student will think critically, communicate effectively, and understand cultural heritage and
diversity.

Essential and Marginal Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Supervise the operation of the assigned media centers.
2. Evaluate, select and requisition new media center and technological materials.
3. Work with administrators to plan, schedule, and facilitate training in the use of instructional
technology in the classrooms.
4. Manage a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials and
overseeing the training on the use of the system.
5. Manage and maintain textbook inventory for the schools using the district’s electronic
management system.
6. Model the instructional use of 21st Century Skills and provide coaching support for teachers.
7. Collaborate with teachers and students to use technology and 21st Century Skills as a means to
enhance, elaborate and integrate learning and information literacy.
8. Arrange for interlibrary loan of materials of interest or use to teachers.
9. Work with teachers in planning for interdisciplinary connections and embedding 21st Century Skills across content areas.
10. Participate and contribute to curriculum development to embed 21st Century Skills across content areas.
11. Participate in review of technology tools and software prior to purchase.
12. Demonstrate and maintain current knowledge of technology, library science and 21st Century Skills.
13. Collect and report data on the usage of library materials including technological resources.
14. Supervise media center assistants in the performance of their duties.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Inform teachers and staff members concerning new materials and technology acquired by the media center.
2. Arrange for frequently changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the media center’s patrons.
3. Oversee the removal of obsolete and worn materials from the collections.
4. Facilitate use of technology throughout the school via instruction and troubleshooting.
5. Inventory and maintain technology hardware as a routine function.
6. Participate in the central ordering process as requested.
7. Serve on district committees as needed.
8. Support schools with academic testing.
9. Carry out other duties as assigned.
10. Supervise the clerical routine necessary for the smooth operation of the media center.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Library/Media Specialist certification.
2. Bachelors Degree required in appropriate major study, Masters preferred but not required.
3. Strong motivational, communicative, and organizational skills.
4. Ability to work effectively with students and adults.
5. Knowledge of ISTE National Technology Standards and PA’s Standards Aligned System as it
applies to technology literacy and information sciences.
6. Demonstrated proficiency using technology for managerial tasks and classroom functions.
7. Knowledge and ability to embed instructional technology into curriculum and classroom
instruction.
8. Willingness to work collaboratively with administrators, teachers and the school community to
embed 21st Century Skills across the curriculum.
9. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
10. Ability to effectively facilitate high quality training and provide coaching support for peers.
11. Commitment to maintain confidentiality.
12. Commitment to work additional summer days for teacher training or managerial needs.
13. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find acceptable and appropriate.
