JOB OVERVIEW:

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) protects and promotes the health of all Philadelphians and provides a safety net for people who are disproportionately impacted by societal factors that limit their access to healthcare and other resources necessary for optimal health. The agency leads programs to prevent communicable diseases; prevent chronic diseases and promote healthy behaviors; prevent environmental health risks and injuries; investigate disease outbreaks; respond to public health emergencies; and promote the health of women, children, and families. In addition, the department operates a series of primary care clinics. PDPH has been on the vanguard of public health, proposing policy solutions to issues like opioid and tobacco use, and intends to continue developing creative solutions to both long-standing urban health problems and new crises.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health’s Health Commissioner’s Office of Communications is seeking a creative and detail-oriented content creator to support the development of engaging, accessible, and visually consistent materials that promote public health initiatives and fulfill the Department’s mission. The ideal candidate will have a strong design portfolio, including photography, marketing, and storytelling efforts, demonstrated ability to translate complex health information into clear visuals, and experience creating content for both digital and print platforms.

The Content Creator: Graphics and Photography will work with the HCO-Comms Director, Deputy Director, and creative team, as well as PDPH programmatic and administrative divisions, other City departments, collaborators, and influencers to develop engaging graphics and photographs on a variety of public health topics. The ideal candidate will have experience in graphic design and photography to help capture attention, inform, and inspire action to fulfill the Department’s mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design creative and visually appealing digital and print materials, including social media infographics, outreach flyers, and other visual assets that effectively communicate public health information.
  • Create and maintain consistency with brand standards and accessibility best practices.
  • Capture, edit, and deliver high-quality photographs.
  • Use design software (e.g., Canva, CapCut, Adobe Pro, etc.) to apply design concepts for multiple platforms and formats (i.e., resizing, optimizing for social media, etc.).
  • Learn about key health department operations, divisions, and program activities to identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Support other creative staff when necessary.
  • Stay current on best practices in digital communication.

SKILLS:

  • Strong graphic design skills with the ability to create engaging digital and print materials
  • Experience with photography, including composition, lighting, and basic photo editing to support visual storytelling
  • Proficiency with design and content creation tools, including Canva, CapCut, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms
  • Ability to translate complex or technical public health information into clear, accessible visual content for diverse audiences
  • Firm understanding of social media storytelling, trends, and visual engagement strategies
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and produce high-quality content efficiently while meeting deadlines
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a creative team

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree or better required, preferably with a focus in graphic design or marketing
  • 1-3 years of experience creating print and digital content (professional or freelance) required
  • 1-3 years of photography experience (professional or freelance) required
  • Experience working with or on health-focused content required

SALARY: $60,000 - $65,000
