About InterDigital
InterDigital is a global research and development company focused primarily on wireless, video, artificial intelligence (“AI”), and related technologies. We design and develop foundational technologies that enable connected, immersive experiences in a broad range of communications and entertainment products and services. We license our innovations worldwide to companies providing such products and services, including makers of wireless communications devices, consumer electronics, IoT devices, cars and other motor vehicles, and providers of cloud-based services such as video streaming. As a leader in wireless technology, our engineers have designed and developed a wide range of innovations that are used in wireless products and networks, from the earliest digital cellular systems to 5G and today’s most advanced Wi-Fi technologies. We are also a leader in video processing and video encoding/decoding technology, with a significant AI research effort that intersects with both wireless and video technologies. Founded in 1972, InterDigital is listed on Nasdaq.

Job Summary:
The Wireless Research group drives next-generation innovation within InterDigital’s Research & Innovation (R&I) organization. Our charter is to identify future technological needs, develop and learn from proof-of-concept prototypes, and innovate around a system focus. Today, our team is at the leading edge of 6G research.
As industry transitions from 5G to 6G, wireless systems are expanding beyond traditional connectivity to encompass sophisticated functions supporting in-network computing, integrated sensing, context-aware intelligence, and advanced AI/ML, including Generative AI. These future networks will deliver highly intelligent, adaptive services that integrate communications with computing and data.
This internship centers on designing and prototyping innovative 6G system architectures and protocols, with a particular focus on the intersection of computing and communications and emerging synergies between Generative AI and wireless networks (6G for GenAI / GenAI for 6G). The selected intern will work closely with InterDigital researchers on a dedicated innovation topic, contributing to design, implementation, simulation, and proof-of-concept development. Opportunities may include participation in open-source initiatives, patent filings, and contributions to global standards bodies such as 3GPP, ETSI, IETF, and IEEE.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate within a Wireless Research team to develop innovative 6G networking protocols, services, and system concepts supporting emerging applications
Review and analyze academic research, patents, and standards documents
Conduct focused research on an agreed-upon topic, including architecture & design documentation, protocol descriptions, diagrams, simulations, proof-of-concepts, and performance evaluation
Design, implement, and test prototype features, algorithms, or applications for next generation 6G wireless systems
Utilize InterDigital’s AdvantEDGE open-source edge networking emulator for experimentation (https://github.com/InterDigitalInc/AdvantEDGE)
Support the creation of external technical outputs such as conference papers or standards contributions.
Qualifications:
PhD/MS Graduate Student in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Networking, or a related field
Knowledge of wireless technologies (3GPP systems, IEEE 802.11/Wi-Fi, etc.)
Understanding of networking protocols (IP, TCP/UDP, HTTP, VLAN, etc.).
Programming experience in one or more of the following:
Proficient in Go and/or Java and web-programming (JavaScript, REST, JSON, etc.).
Proficient in C or C++, a plus.
Database experience (SQL, no SQL, etc.), a plus.
Proficient in scripting languages (e.g., Python, bash), a plus.
Knowledge in Virtualization, including Kubernetes and Docker is a plus.
Experience with AI/ML algorithms is a plus, including Python based ML modules such as Keras, Tensor flow.
Research experience in 5G/6G, Distributed Systems, Machine Learning, Generative AI (LLMs/SLMs/VLMs/etc.), Cloud / Edge Computing, Network or Systems Security, or Trusted Computing or Networking is a plus.
Publications in relevant top conferences and journals are a plus.
